Gas vs. Electric: The Great Debate

Most homes in Central Indiana are already set up for one or the other.

\nGas: Generally costs more to install but is cheaper to operate monthly. Gas heaters have a faster \"recovery rate,\" meaning they heat water back up quickly after a long shower.
\nElectric: Usually cheaper to buy upfront and easier to install since they don't require venting. However, they can be more expensive to run unless you go with a high-efficiency model.

Understanding Gas Options: Standard, Power Vent, & Tankless

If you have a gas line, you have three main paths:

\nStandard Atmospheric Vent: These use a metal chimney to let exhaust rise naturally. They are simple and reliable but require a proper chimney setup.
\nPower Vent: These use a fan to push exhaust out through a PVC pipe (usually out the side of the house). These are great for finished basements where a chimney isn't accessible.
\nTankless: These heat water on demand. They take up very little space and provide endless hot water, but they require a larger gas line and a higher initial investment.

Electric Options: Standard vs. Hybrid Heat Pump

\nStandard Electric: The traditional \"big tank\" with heating elements. Simple, but they use a lot of energy.
\nHybrid Heat Pump: These are the future of electric heating. They pull heat from the surrounding air to warm the water. They are incredibly efficient—often paying for themselves in energy savings within a few years—though they do need a bit more space and a cool environment (like a garage or basement).

A Note on Electric Tankless: We generally do not recommend electric tankless heaters for most Indianapolis homes. Often, the electrical upgrades needed for your breaker panel cost more than the unit itself!

Maintenance: The Key to Longevity

Regardless of which unit you pick, maintenance is non-negotiable, especially with Indy’s hard water.

\nTank Units: Need to be flushed annually to remove sediment and \"calcification\" (the white flakes that settle at the bottom). We also recommend checking the anode rod every few years to prevent the tank from rusting out.
\nTankless Units: These require a \"descale\" flush with a cleaning solution once a year. If you don't descale, the heat exchanger can clog up, leading to expensive repairs or total failure.
