Your plumbing system is only as reliable as the pipes it’s built with. At C & P Plumbing and Contracting, we see everything from 100-year-old metal to modern plastics. Understanding what you have—and its potential weak spots—can save you from a catastrophic water claim.

The Lineup: Common Pipe Materials

\nGalvanized Steel: Found in older Indy homes, these pipes rust from the inside out. As they corrode, they release iron deposits that clog your faucets and turn your water orange. Worse, when joined directly to copper without a special \"dielectric\" fitting, they cause electrolysis—a chemical reaction that eats away the metal and causes fast leaks.
\nCopper: The gold standard for decades. It’s durable and bacteriostatic, but it can be pinholed by aggressive water or poor soldering.
\nPEX (A & B): The modern favorite. It’s flexible, freeze-resistant, and has fewer joints. PEX-A is generally considered superior for its \"memory,\" allowing it to expand and contract more reliably than PEX-B.
\nCPVC: A yellowish plastic. While common, it becomes extremely brittle with age. A simple bump can cause a 20-year-old CPVC pipe to shatter like glass.
\nPolybutylene: If you have \"Grey Pipe\" from the 80s or 90s, beware. This material is notorious for sudden failure due to the chlorine in city water, often leading to massive class-action lawsuits in the past.
\nPolyethylene: Mostly used for the main water service line coming from the street or well into your home. It’s tough and flexible, making it ideal for underground use.

Making the Connection: ProPress vs. Sweat vs. SharkBite

How pipes are joined is just as important as the pipe itself:

\nSweating (Soldering): The traditional way to join copper using a torch. It’s reliable but requires a high level of skill.
\nProPress: This is our preferred professional method. We use a hydraulic tool to \"press\" copper fittings. It’s faster, safer (no open flame), and creates a permanent, mechanical seal that is incredibly strong.
\nSharkBite (Push-to-Connect): Great for a \"Sunday afternoon emergency,\" but we don't recommend them for permanent, behind-the-wall use. They rely on a rubber O-ring that can eventually fail.

Valves: Ball vs. Gate

If you have an emergency, the valve is your best friend—if it works.

\nGate Valves: These have a round handle you turn multiple times. They are prone to \"seizing\" or the internal gate snapping off, leaving you unable to shut off the water when you need to most.
\nBall Valves: These have a lever handle that only requires a quarter-turn. They are much more reliable, easier to see if they are \"on\" or \"off,\" and are the only type we recommend for main shut-offs.

Leak Detection & Emergency Readiness

A small damp spot on the ceiling can hide a massive problem. We use specialized leak detection equipment to find \"slab leaks\" or wall leaks without tearing your house apart.

Pro Tip: Every person in your home should know exactly where the main water shut-off is located. In an emergency, every second the water is running is more money in floor and drywall repairs.
